When Life Is a Continuous Celebration, Every Day Turns into a Festival!

In India, it is traditional for followers of gurus to celebrate the day of the year on which they were born, when they left their bodies, and when they became enlightened, as well as the July full moon called Guru Purnima.
For many years, the people around Osho celebrated these days. Gradually, Osho helped us understand that he is not a guru and doesn’t have followers. He removes the “guru” from “Guru Purnima” and made it very clear that he is anything but traditional – and he requests that these “holy” days be dropped.

Even from the very beginning, Osho has been in favor of celebration as a way of life, rather than on preset days.

Still today, some people hanker for what they perceive to be the “good old days” and find it hard to understand Osho’s insistence on loving change:
“The future belongs to those who will love change and who will be dancingly ready to change, who will celebrate change. And whenever there will be an occasion to change, they will never miss it. The future is going to be with them. History is taking a great turn. It is moving on another plane. That’s why my insistence is always that whenever something is changing, don’t prevent it.” 1

To support that change, we are outlining the main elements in the evolution from celebrating only on specific days to making every day a celebration.

In a public talk in the early 70’s Osho says:

“We have a few festive days. Once a year we observe Holi, the festival of colors, painting ourselves and each other with bright colors. Once a year we celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, and light many lamps in the darkness. But our life is dry and dull; and it is just because this is so that man has had to create festivals. The birds, the beasts, the plants, the rivers, the waterfalls – they have neither Holi nor Diwali. It is because man is sick that he is satisfied with just one Diwali. One Diwali is just a consolation. So on that day the new clothes, the firecrackers, the lighted lamps – and then we return to the same gloominess, the same prison, the same misery, the same anxiety.
“When Holi comes, we sing and dance, breaking all bounds and throwing off our normal codes of conduct. On that day we throw all our morality, rules and etiquette to the winds; for one day our river flows, breaking all disciplines. But do you think that a river that flows for one day of the year is going to reach the ocean? And even this one day is only an apology for the real flowing; it is just a mockery of our real selves! Look at nature: there is Existence enjoying Holi every day, and celebrating Diwali daily. In nature the colors flow afresh every day, new flowers open each morning. Even before the old leaves fall, the new buds are bursting out and the new shoots are springing up. The festival does not stop even for a moment – it is non-stop, every moment is Diwali. Such will be the life of a religious person. He will be festive each moment – he is grateful that he is. His every breath is an expression of gratitude and benediction.” 2

 And in the late 70’s in another public talk, Osho indicates the same approach:

“But once celebration penetrates your being it continues. Then there is no holiday, the whole of life is a celebration. Then all days are holidays, work is play, love is worship, and every act is meditation.” 3

When speaking to his secretaries in Nepal in early 1986 Osho makes this more explicit.

 Osho is explaining that when he has a new base – and that there will be a new model.
On his list was that we stop having these celebration days. This idea of celebrating days of birth and enlightenment and other holy days is an old idea that was no longer appropriate for his work. That the largest risk is people not understanding that in every religion in the world they have holy days — sometimes based on bogus miracles.
That people of good intentions will end up wanting to create a religion of his work. This is the greatest risk to his work and one anchor of all religions is holy days.

In a series of public talks in 1986 Osho explains that he is going to drop all the festivals:

 “I am going to drop all the festivals so there is no need for twenty thousand, thirty thousand people together, because then there is no intimacy. So the festival will be every day. And why have only one festival when you can have three hundred and sixty-five!” 4

And in other talks from that time, he says again that there will be no more regular festival days:

“Now we will not be having any celebrations; now the celebration will continue all the year round – three hundred and sixty-five days of celebration!… And this is going to be the new order of the buddhafield.” 5

And:

“We will dissolve those four ceremonies and make the whole year a festival – a three-hundred-and-sixty-five-day festival….
“So now the whole year will be the festival.” 6

On his return to India in the same year, Osho talks further about this in public in Mumbai:

“As your silence grows; your friendliness, your love grows; your life becomes a moment-to-moment dance, a joy, a celebration….
“Do you hear the firecrackers outside? Have you ever thought about why, all over the world, in every culture, in every society, there are a few days in the year for celebration? These few days for celebration are just a compensation – because these societies have taken away all celebration of your life, and if nothing is given to you in compensation your life can become a danger to the culture.
“Every culture has to give some compensation to you so that you don’t feel completely lost in misery, in sadness. But these compensations are false.
“These firecrackers outside and these lights outside cannot make you rejoice. They are only for children; for you they are just a nuisance. But in your inner world there can be a continuity of lights, songs, joys. Always remember that society compensates you when it feels that the repressed may explode into a dangerous situation if it is not compensated. The society finds some way of allowing you to let out the repressed. But this is not true celebration, and it cannot be true.
 “True celebration should come from your life, in your life. And true celebration cannot be according to the calendar, that on the first of November you will celebrate. Strange, the whole year you are miserable and on the first of November suddenly you come out of misery, dancing. Either the misery was false, or the first of November is false; both cannot be true. And once the first of November is gone, you are back in your dark hole, everybody in his misery, everybody in his anxiety. Life should be a continuous celebration, a festival of lights the whole year round. Only then you can grow up, you can blossom.
 “Transform small things into celebration.” 7

On his return to Pune in 1987:

His secretary for India raised a question about an upcoming celebration day and Osho again expresses that that was not important. She pleads with him, with tears in her eyes, telling him that without these special days, Indians wouldn’t come – they needed something special.
After a long pause, Osho shares that this is fine, and only for now. That he has not been available to Indians for a number of years and if this is useful for an interim period for people from India to come and be in his physical presence, then we can do it for a time.

The Last Zen Talks:

During that year of Zen Talks Osho speaks almost every night on celebration and almost always ends with the words, “Can we celebrate now?” In particular, on the same day he stops dancing with us every night, he says, “Do you promise me you will be celebrating when I’m gone?” 8
And on another occasion says:
“I celebrate myself. And I want you all to celebrate yourself. Become a dance, become a song. Become a lotus, become a spring. There is no religion and there is no God to prohibit you – you are free from all superstitions, you are free from all God-oriented theologies, you are free from all rubbish that everybody in the world is carrying within himself. Throw it out so that your inner world is completely clean and ready to welcome the buddha.” 9
And also:
“Celebration is my manifesto. Let it be your manifesto too.” 10

The Evening Meeting:

When the evening meeting of the White Robe Brotherhood was introduced in August of 1989, the instructions about the celebration were specific: “At present, there are three stages of the evening meetings.  The first is a wild celebration of energy mounting….”

In November 1989:

Osho says to his caretaker: “Bring out my celebration robes (for the evening meeting), because every day is a celebration.”

In December 1989:

Osho says to his caretaker: “The celebration went really well. It was the best celebration ever.”
As is continuously the case, our understanding of where Osho is pointing deepens over time as we learn to listen with more awareness. As we begin to see his view with a wider horizon and greater clarity, it looks meaningless to confine the phenomenon of celebration to a certain date or dates, especially when Osho is specifically asking us to celebrate every single evening. Also, this kind of “Christmas and Easter” approach gives a sectarian color to his approach and draws us into the same traditional trap he so consistently worked to get us out of. As he put it: “The greatest risk to this existential proposal is for the unconscious mind to turn it into a religion.”
So, in 2002, after all this time, the Osho Meditation Resort Management Team decided it was time to trust that today’s participants are mature enough to come for meditation, and to celebrate whenever they come – and that they will come and celebrate, rather than coming for a celebration. So that we can at last implement Osho’s repeatedly expressed wishes and suggestions in this regard, outlined above, without worrying about the numbers who may not come without such a celebration.
And when considering the idea of celebrating the days of Osho’s birth and death, it is worth noting the words Osho dictated to go over the bed with his ash underneath: “Never Born, Never Died.”

जब जीवन एक उत्सव होता है, तो हर दिन एक त्योहार में बदल जाता है!
 
भारत में, गुरुओं के अनुयायियों के लिए वह दिन मनाना पारंपरिक है, जिस दिन वे पैदा हुए थे, फिर जब उन्होंने अपने शरीर को छोड़ दिया था, और जब वे प्रबुद्ध हो गए थे, साथ ही जुलाई पूर्णिमा को गुरु पूर्णिमा कहा जाता है।
कई वर्षों तक, ओशो के आसपास के लोगों ने इन दिनों को मनाया। धीरे –धीरे, ओशो ने हमें यह समझने में मदद की कि वह गुरु नहीं हैं और कि हम उनके अनुयायी नहीं हैं। वह “गुरु पूर्णिमा” से “गुरु” को हटा देते  

हैं  और यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वे पारंपरिक नहीं हैं – और वे  अनुरोध करते हैं कि इन “पवित्र” दिनों को छोड़ दिया जाए।

यहां तक कि शुरुआत से ही, ओशो पूर्व निर्धारित दिनों के बजाय, जीवन के एक तरीके के रूप में उत्सव के पक्ष में रहे हैं ।
आज भी, कुछ लोग “पुराने अच्छे दिनों” की याद करते हैं और उनके लिए यह समझना मुश्किल है कि  परिवर्तन पर ओशो का कितना आग्रह है: 
“भविष्य उन लोगों का है जो परिवर्तन से प्यार करेंगे और जो परिवर्तन के लिए तैयार होंगे, जो बदलाव का जश्न मनाएंगे। और जब भी बदलने का अवसर होगा, वे इसे चूकेंगे नहीं । भविष्य उनके साथ होने जा रहा है। इतिहास एक शानदार मोड़ ले रहा है। यह दूसरे तल पर आगे बढ़ रहा है। इसलिए मेरा आग्रह हमेशा होता है कि जब भी कुछ बदल रहा हो, तो उसे न रोकें। ” 1

उस परिवर्तन का समर्थन करने के लिए, हम विकास में मुख्य तत्वों को केवल विशिष्ट दिनों में जश्न मनाने से हटा कर दिन एक उत्सव मनाने के लिए तैयार कर रहे हैं। 

70 के दशक की शुरुआत में एक सार्वजनिक बातचीत में ओशो कहते हैं:

“हमारे पास कुछ उत्सव के दिन हैं। साल में एक बार हम होली, रंगों के त्योहार, खुद को और एक –दूसरे को चमकीले रंगों से सराबोर करते हैं। साल में एक बार हम दिवाली, रोशनी का त्योहार और अंधेरे में कई लैंपों को जश्न मनाते हैं। लेकिन हमारा जीवन सूखा और सुस्त है; बीमार जय कि वह सिर्फ एक दिवाली से संतुष्ट है।“ 
“जब होली आती है, तो हम गाते हैं और नृत्य करते हैं, सभी सीमाओं को तोड़ते हैं और हमारे आचरण के सामान्य नियमों को उतार फेंकते हैं। उस दिन हम अपनी सभी नैतिकता, नियमों और शिष्टाचार को हवाओं में उड़ा देते हैं; एक दिन के लिए हमारी नदी बहती है, सभी अनुशासन को तोड़ती है। लेकिन क्या आपको लगता है कि एक नदी जो साल में एक दिन के लिए बहती है, वह समुद्र तक पहुंचने वाली है? और यह एक दिन भी केवल बड़ी सूखी हुई सिकुड़ी सी बहती है; अस्तित्व हर दिन होली का आनंद ले रहा है, और दैनिक रूप से दिवाली मना रहा है। एक पल के लिए भी रुकता नहीं  है–यह नॉन–स्टॉप है, हर पल दिवाली है; कृतज्ञता और आशीष है। ” 2

और 70 के दशक के उत्तरार्ध में एक और सार्वजनिक वार्ता में, ओशो उसी दृष्टिकोण को इंगित करते हैं:

“ एक बार जब उत्सव आपके अंतस में प्रवेश कर जाए तो वह जारी रहेगा । तब कोई छुट्टी नहीं है, पूरा जीवन एक उत्सव है। फिर सभी दिन छुट्टियां हैं, काम एक खेल है, प्रेम पूजा है, और हर कार्य ध्यान है।” 3

1986 की शुरुआत में नेपाल में अपने सचिवों से बात करते समय ओशो यह अधिक स्पष्ट करते हैं। 

ओशो समझा रहे हैं कि जब उनके पास एक नया ठिकाना होगा – तब एक नया मॉडल होगा।
उनकी सूची में यह शामिल  था कि हम इन उत्सव के दिनों को बंद कर देंगे। जन्म दिन और ज्ञान दिन और अन्य पवित्र दिनों का जश्न मनाने का यह विचार एक पुराना विचार है जो अब उनके काम के लिए उपयुक्त नहीं था। सबसे बड़ा जोखिम यह है कि लोग यह नहीं समझते हैं कि दुनिया में हर धर्म में उनके पवित्र दिन हैं – कभी–कभी ये फर्जी चमत्कारों पर आधारित होते हैं।
अच्छे इरादों के लोग ओशो के काम का धर्म बनाना चाहते हैं। यह उनके काम के लिए सबसे बड़ा खतरा है. और पवित्र दिन सभी धर्मों का एक लंगर है।

1986 में सार्वजनिक वार्ता की एक श्रृंखला में ओशो बताते हैं कि वे सभी त्योहारों को छोड़ने जा रहे हैं:

“मैं सभी त्योहारों को छोड़ने जा रहा हूं, इसलिए बीस हजार, तीस हजार लोगों को एक साथ रखने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है, क्योंकि तब कोई अंतरंगता नहीं होती। इसलिए त्योहार हर दिन होगा। और जब तीन सौ पैंसठ त्योहार हो सकते हैं तो केवल एक त्योहार क्यों हो! ” 4

और किसी अन्य वार्ता में, वे फिर से कहते हैं कि कोई और नियमित त्योहार दिन नहीं होगा:

“अब हम कोई समारोह नहीं करेंगे; अब उत्सव पूरे वर्ष जारी रहेगा–उत्सव के तीन सौ पैंसठ दिन! … और यह बुद्धफिल्ड का नया आदेश होने जा रहा है।” 5 

और:

“हम उन चार समारोहों को भंग कर देंगे और पूरे वर्ष को एक त्योहार बनाएंगे–एक तीन–सौ–पैंसठ दिन का त्योहार…।
“तो अब पूरा साल त्योहार होगा।” 6

उसी वर्ष भारत लौटने पर, ओशो ने मुंबई में सार्वजनिक रूप से इस बारे में बात की:

“जैसे–जैसे आपकी चुप्पी बढ़ती है; आपकी मित्रता, आपका प्यार बढ़ता है; आपका जीवन एक पल–पल–पल का नृत्य, एक खुशी, एक उत्सव …” बन जाता है।
“क्या आप इन पटाखों को बाहर सुनते हैं? क्या आपने कभी इस बारे में सोचा है कि दुनिया भर में, हर संस्कृति में, हर समाज में, उत्सव के लिए वर्ष में केवल कुछ दिन हैं? उत्सव के लिए ये कुछ दिन सिर्फ एक मुआवजा या क्षतिपूर्ति हैं – क्योंकि इन समाजों ने आपके जीवन के सभी उत्सव को छीन लिया है, और अगर मुआवजे में आपको कुछ भी नहीं दिया जाता है तो आपका जीवन संस्कृति के लिए खतरा बन सकता है।
“हर संस्कृति को आपको कुछ मुआवजा देना होगा ताकि आप दुख में, पीड़ा में पूरी तरह से खोए हुए महसूस न करें। लेकिन ये क्षतिपूर्ति झूठी है।
“ये बाहर के पटाखे और बाहर की रोशनी आपको आनन्दित नहीं कर सकती हैं। वे केवल बच्चों के लिए हैं; आपके लिए वे सिर्फ एक उपद्रव हैं। लेकिन आपकी आंतरिक दुनिया में रोशनी, गीत, खुशियों की निरंतरता हो सकती है। हमेशा याद रखें कि समाज आपकी  क्षतिपूर्ति करता है। जब यह महसूस होता है कि दमन एक खतरनाक स्थिति में विस्फोट हो सकता है अगर यह मुआवजा नहीं है। 
“सच्चा उत्सव आपके जीवन से, आपके जीवन में ओरागत होना चाहिए। और सच्चा उत्सव कैलेंडर के अनुसार नहीं हो सकता है, कि पहली नवंबर को आप जश्न मनाएंगे।आश्चर्य! पूरे साल आप दुखी हैं और नवंबर के पहले दिन आप अचानक दुख से बाहर आ जाते हैं, नाचते हुए। या तो वह दुख झूठा था या पहली नवंबर झूठी थी .दोनों सच नही हो सकते. और एक बार पहली नवंबर विदा हो जाए तो फिर से आप अपने बिल में घुसते हैं —हर कोई अपनी चिंता में, अपने दुख में. जिंदगी एक अनवरत उत्सब होनी चाहिए. तभी तुम विकसित हो सकते हो, खिल सकते हो.
“छोटी चीजों को उत्सव में बदलना।” 7

1987 में पुणे लौटने पर: 

भारत के लिए उनके सचिव ने एक आगामी उत्सव दिवस के बारे में एक सवाल उठाया और ओशो ने फिर से व्यक्त किया कि यह महत्वपूर्ण नहीं था। वह, आँखों में आँसू लिए , उन्हें बताती है कि इन विशेष दिनों के बिना, भारतीय नहीं आएंगे – उन्हें कुछ विशेष की आवश्यकता थी।
एक लंबे मौन के बाद, ओशो ने साझा किया कि यह ठीक है, और केवल इस समय के लिए। वह कई वर्षों से भारतीयों के लिए उपलब्ध नहीं रहे हैं और यदि यह भारत के लोगों के लिए अंतरिम अवधि के लिए उपयोगी है कि वे उनकी भौतिक उपस्थिति का लाभ लें , तो हम इसे कुछ समय के लिए कर सकते हैं।

अंतिम ज़ेन वार्ता:

 ज़ेन के उस वर्ष के दौरान ओशो ने लगभग हर रात उत्सव पर बात की और उनकी वार्ता लगभग हमेशा इन शब्दों के साथ समाप्त होती है, “क्या अब हम उत्सव मना सकते हैं?” विशेष रूप से, जिस दिन उन्होंने हमारे साथ नृत्य करना बंद कर दिया उस दिन उन्होंने कहा, “क्या आप वादा करते हैं कि जब मैं न रहूं तो आप जश्न मना रहे होंगे?” 8

और एक अन्य अवसर पर वे कहते हैं :

“मैं खुद का जश्न मनाता हूं। और मैं चाहता हूं कि आप सभी खुद का जश्न मनाएं। एक नृत्य बनें, एक गीत बनें। एक कमल बनें, एक वसंत बनें। कोई धर्म नहीं है और आपको प्रतिबंधित करने के लिए कोई ईश्वर नहीं है–आप सभी अंधविश्वासों से मुक्त हैं, आप सभी ईश्वर–उन्मुख धर्मशास्त्रों से मुक्त हैं, आप उन सभी बकवास से मुक्त हैं जो दुनिया में हर कोई अपने भीतर ले जा रहा है। इसे बाहर फेंक दें ताकि आपकी आंतरिक दुनिया पूरी तरह से साफ हो और बुद्ध का स्वागत करने के लिए तैयार हो। ” 9

और यह भी: 

“उत्सव मेरा घोषणापत्र है। इसे अपने घोषणापत्र भी होने दें। ” 10

शाम की बैठक:

जब 1989 के अगस्त में व्हाइट रॉब ब्रदरहुड की शाम की बैठक शुरू की गई थी, तो उत्सव के बारे में निर्देश विशिष्ट थे: “वर्तमान में, शाम की बैठकों के तीन चरण हैं। पहला ऊर्जा बढ़ने का एक जंगली उत्सव है…। “

नवंबर 1989 में:

ओशो अपने कार्यवाहक से कहते हैं : “मेरे उत्सव के वस्त्र (शाम की बैठक के लिए) को बाहर लाओ, क्योंकि हर दिन एक उत्सव है।” 

दिसंबर 1989 में:

ओशो अपने कार्यवाहक से कहते हैं: “उत्सव वास्तव में अच्छी तरह से संपन्न हुआ। यह अब तक का सबसे अच्छा उत्सव था। ”

इसलिए, 2002 में, ओशो मेडिटेशन रिज़ॉर्ट मैनेजमेंट टीम ने फैसला किया कि यह भरोसा करने का समय है कि आज के ध्यान प्रतिभागी पर्याप्त परिपक्व हैं,और जब भी वे आएंगे, तभी वे आकर उत्सव मनाएंगे, बजाय इसके कि जब उत्सव होगा तभी वे आएंगे। एक उत्सव के लिए आ रहा है। ताकि हम अंतिम रूप से ओशो की बार–बार व्यक्त की जाने वाली इच्छाओं और सुझावों को इस संबंध में लागू कर सकें, ऊपर उल्लिखित, बिना किसी चिंता के,उन संख्याओं की चिंता किए बिना जो इस तरह के उत्सव के बिना नहीं आ सकते। 
और जब ओशो के जन्म और मृत्यु के दिनों को मनाने के विचार पर सोचा जाए तो उन शब्दों पर ध्यान देने योग्य है जो ओशो ने अपनी अस्थियों के साथ बिस्तर पर लिखने के लिए कहे थे।
” न कभी जन्मे न कभी मृत हुए।“
