60 Parables and Stories
About Our Mortal Body of Clay and the Immortal Flame of Consciousness
Book — Also available in other formats: eBook

What a precious small book this is – a great gift item or bedside companion. It is one of the very few books that is handwritten, rather than spoken, by Osho. Each beautifully told story deals with an intensely human issue that everyone will have encountered in day-to-day life. Osho’s commentaries invite readers to "play the game of life" with more awareness and humanity the next time such a situation occurs. The medium of parables means that reading these insights is a delight, and grasping them a real possibility.

Excerpt from: Earthen Lamps, Letter 34
“One day I was in a forest. It was the rainy season and the trees were full of joy. I asked my companions, “Do you see how happy the trees are? And why? – because they have become what they actually were meant to be. If the seed is one thing and the tree wishes to become something else, there will not be so much happiness in the forest, but because the trees know nothing about ideals, they have become what their nature wanted them to be. Fulfillment lies where what unfolds is in keeping with something’s own form and self-nature. Man is in misery because he is against himself. He fights with his own roots and is constantly struggling to be different from what he is. In this way he loses himself and also loses that paradise which is his natural right.”

“Friends, is it not desirable to wish to be what you can be? Is it not desirable for you to give up all efforts to be anything other than your own selves? Is it not in that very desire that the main source of all miseries lives? What attempt could be more impossible and meaningless than the desire to be different from yourself? Everyone can be only that which he can be: in the seed is hidden the development of a tree. The desire to be something else can only lead to failure – failure, because how can that which is not hidden in the self from the beginning manifest in the end?”

“Life is a manifestation of that which is covered and hidden at birth. Development, growth, is simply its uncovering, and when the hidden does not manifest, there is misery. Just as a mother will find herself in unbearable and indescribable pain if she carries the child in her womb for her whole life, similarly those people who do not become what they were destined to be find they are miserable. But I observe that every person is running in the same race. Everyone wants to be what he is not and so no one can ever succeed. What is the ultimate result? The result is that people do not become what they could have been. And as they do not become what they cannot be, they are also deprived of what they dreamed they could become.”
